Metro Exodus is an open-world first-person shooter developed by 4A Games and published by Deep Silver. Released in February 2019, Metro Exodus is the third installment in the Metro series, and marks a major departure from its predecessors, moving from the claustrophobic underground tunnels of Moscow to a vast open world filled with danger, mystery, and opportunity.
Metro Exodus is set in post-nuclear war Russia, and continues the story of Artyom, the protagonist of the previous games, as he embarks on a journey through the ruins of Russia in search of a better future for the remnants of humanity. The game combines horror, survival, action, stealth, and exploration with deep narrative elements, creating an immersive cinematic experience that focuses on the human cost of war, hope, and survival.
The game is set in 2036, two years after the events of Metro: Last Light. The survivors of the Moscow Metro system live in relative safety, but Artyom has long believed that humanity could rebuild itself above ground, away from the claustrophobic and dangerous tunnels. At the start of the game, after a series of intense events, Artyom and a group of survivors—including his wife Anna, a sniper and fellow soldier—decide to leave Moscow in search of a new home. They board a modified train, the Aurora, and embark on a journey across the Russian wasteland to find a place where they can start over and avoid the constant threat of mutated creatures, dangerous human factions, and the lingering effects of nuclear fallout.
During their journey, Artyom and his companions will travel through a variety of vast environments, from the snowy wilderness of Russia’s Volga region to the sun-scorched deserts of the Caspian Sea, and beyond. Along the way, they encounter new characters, hostile factions, and mutated creatures, while uncovering secrets about the state of the world above ground and the true nature of humanity’s survival in the aftermath of such a devastating conflict.
The game offers a more sandbox-like exploration experience, allowing players to choose when and how to explore each environment. While some parts of the game maintain a linear path, the world is filled with hidden areas and optional objectives to discover.
Survival is at the core of Metro Exodus, and resource management remains a core element of the gameplay. Ammo remains scarce, forcing players to carefully consider when to fight and when to avoid combat. The game features a robust crafting system, allowing players to create useful items from extracted materials—whether ammunition, health packs, or air filters for a gas mask. Crafting materials can be found scattered throughout the world, and collecting is vital to progression, especially in more hostile environments.
While combat is a major element of Metro Exodus, the game encourages players to use stealth whenever possible. Many encounters with hostile factions, both hostile humans and mutated creatures, can be avoided or dealt with without direct confrontation, especially in more open areas. The player can sneak through enemy territory, create distractions, and use silent drops to bypass obstacles.
The game offers a variety of weapons, including pistols, shotguns, assault rifles, and bows. Weapons can be customized with various attachments such as scopes, silencers, and extended magazines, allowing players to adapt their equipment to different situations.
