Far Cry 5 is set in the rural region of Hope County, Montana, which has been taken over by a fanatical doomsday cult known as the Project at Eden's Gate, led by the charismatic and enigmatic Joseph Seed. The open-world environment includes farmland, forests, and small towns.

Players take on the role of a customizable, mute protagonist known as the Deputy, tasked with confronting Joseph Seed and liberating Hope County from the cult's control.
